Our passage today from Luke is wrapped around the parable of the fig tree. This parable appears in all three synoptic gospels. In all three we start this week’s Gospel with the coming of the Son of Man. In Luke there will be tribulations before His coming in the clouds with glory. In Matthew, the Son of Man will appear in heaven before coming in the clouds. In Mark as in Matthew, the stars will fall from the sky!
After the parable in Luke we have the call to be vigilant, in Matthew, the coming of the Son of Man at an unknown day and time, while Mark calls for a need to watchful.
We have a great deal of confidence and hope through these passages that point not only to the second coming but also to our celebration of the birth of the Christ child.
I offer a prayer for the spectacular vision offered by Jesus in these passages that moves our faith to the Son of Man and the promise of signs, in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth!
