Faith and power, power and faith. First we find that the number twelve is used in both parts of this Marcan “sandwich” story. The number twelve is a call back to the twelve tribes of Israel and the number of Apostles called by Jesus. Mark loved to interrupt a story with an aside or parallel story. The curing of the woman with faith that the power of Jesus would cure her hemorrhages if she would but touch his garment. Mark pauses the story of Jairus’ daughter who lays dying at home to relay the story of this woman who was an outcast for these past twelve years with a seemingly incurable medical problem. Then back to the synagogue official who wishes to employ the power of Jesus to effect a cure for his daughter and Jesus will implore the faith of Jairus as they travel to his home. Happy ending as the twelve year old girl is raised from the dead by Jesus who orders her to be fed.

Our prayer is for the power of Jesus be always present in our faith lives.
