Thomas plays a prominent part in this week’s Gospel. Thomas was certainly a most colorful character maybe after Peter and John. Thomas is the Jewish word for twin. So where was his twin, if he had one? Didymmus in Greek also means twin. Was he a twin of one of the other Apostles?
In chapter 14 of John’s Gospel at Jesus’ last supper discourse, Jesus proclaims that the disciples know the way. Thomas says how can we know the way? Jesus then gives His famous reply that He is way the way, the truth and the life!
Finally, in our Gospel this week, we hear the most direct declaration of Jesus’ divinity from Thomas that Jesus was his Lord and God.
