In Mark’s Gospel, before Jesus had followers or a following, he was baptized and then driven into the desert to be tempted by Satan. So what is it like to be tempted by Satan? We all experience it. With Adam and Eve, it was lies, his most pernicious way.
Turning to Matthew we read that Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. Luke adds that Jesus was filled with the holy Spirit.
Back to Mark, we see Jesus finish his forty days in the desert and immediately after John the Baptist’s arrest, begins to preach in Galilee. Announcing the fulfillment of God’s kingdom and invites us to repent and believe the Gospel (the good news).
What is it to repent? Jeremiah in the old testament and John in Revelation use this word quite often. Jeremiah starts out chapter 4 with a call from God to repent but when we get to verse 28, God says He will not repent of his punishment if the Israelites do not turn back to him.
In Revelation chapter 2, John says, the Ephesians, having lost the love they had at first, must realize how they have fallen and their need to repent.
Repenting is a continuous turning back to God as we are tempted and we sin.
