Imagining Sunday’s Gospel

In the story of the leper who wished to be made clean, the leper first wishes to be healed which he would need to start the process of re-entering society. But once made clean that seems a little farther down the list.

In the first reading we have the rules in Leviticus for conduct if you have a skin disease like leprosy. Elsewhere in Leviticus the prescription includes the distance you are to keep from others of 4 cubits or about six feet. Muffling your beard included covering your mouth with your beard. All this sounds so familiar given our recent battles with Covid. So maybe our modern safeguards were a harken back to the Old Testament. And instead of a priest, we ran to the Covid test to see if we were “healed”.

How do we react when we are “cured”? Do we spread the news it abroad or do we keep it to ourselves?
